Since 1974 Blue Sky Design has been active in designing and building structures in the island and mountain communities of British Columbia, as well as in Vancouver and Victoria. Our work is invested with the spirit and natural beauty of this unique part of the world, and displays a wide range of involvement: site and environmental analysis, all phases of building design, contract documentation, building construction, and project management. Years of architectural study, and the invaluable "hands on" experience of building, have enabled us to bring an understanding of architectural theory and a strong sense of regionalism together with modern building technologies. This marriage of ideas has produced an architecture that is appropriate to its site and climate, and responsive to its inhabitants and their needs. Our design and construction projects are a collaborative process with a great deal of creative input expected from those working together, including the clients. One basic premise is that all participants are able to communicate freely with each other. We have introduced the landscape as an equal participant in this dialogue. The sites we deal with are predominantly rural and often quite wild. They usually reveal powerful natural features and forces. This determines that our design responses to the surrounding environment are strong and obvious. Our work continues to evolve and change, but always from a well established foundation. We believe that the integration of nature, tectonic form, and culture; and the understanding and inclusion of the myths, realities and histories of this area are essential to our design response. Blue Sky's approach to design and building is an approach that uses ecological, cultural and symbolic aspects of a site as form givers.
