Starting in the summer of 1996 Kathy Rieder, Michael McNamara and Duane Elverum began teaching a 6 credit design/build course through the University of British Columbia School of Architecture. Over a period of years, together with groups of students, many of whom are gaining real on-site experience for the first time, we will design and build a 10 unit elder housing village for the Hornby Island Elder Housing Society.
In the summer of 1998, with 3 units complete and the first elders in residence,
we concentrated on issues of landscape design. The fourth unit was successfully
completed in the summer of 1999. Since then the project has been recognized with
awards both nationally and internationally.
